You remember Flight Control right? Well, the guys at Firemint have just released the long awaited sequel,Flight Control Rocket. This time we’re going into space, a whole new adventure with the same game mechanics you loved in Flight Control. Instead of landing planes on airstrips, you’re landing spaceships on docks. Fans will be able to pick up the game and start playing straight away from the App Store.
Flight Control Rocket Got Right
The Casual Gamer- Like Flight Control, Flight Control Rocket offers the same casual experience everyone loved in the original. It’s easy, simple and nothing more than a finger to trace a path for the space ships to land, being careful that you don’t crash into other spaceships causing you to lose a life. This is where Firemint puts your skills to the test with multiple spaceships in the mass.
I Want Rockets, Lots Of Rockets – There are now 15 different types of rockets to land. As much as it sounds overwhelming, it’s a lot of fun and offers a little bit of variety to the game, instead of the same old rockets over and over again.
Flight School – Before you start commanding your own ship, you should check out flight school first. Flight School is a tutorial level where you can familiarise yourself with some of the new ships and carriers which you will come across in space.
If you haven’t played Flight Control before I recommend playing through the tutorial and getting to know whatFlight Control Rocket is all about..
Here Have An Extra Life -Remember how frustrating it was in Flight Control when every time you crashed you had to start over again. Well not this time. In Flight Control Rocket you have three lives and if you happen to die on your third life, you can buy an extra life with the coins you collect in-game. Time after time you will have swarms of space ships flying at you, without having time to think, quickly trying to dock all of them according to their colours. Then you will be grateful that you have those extra lives handy.
Coins-Coins act as the in-game currency. You are able to spend your coins on items and bots in the Flight Control Shop. You collect coins over time while playing the game or you can buy them from the Store to quickly gain access to more modes, bots and Power Crystals.
Sound & Visual-I have to say I am very impressed with the sounds of the game, they are fun, bright and very 70’s. Though the visuals are incredible, it doesn’t really wow me. After playing this for a day I wasn’t too impressed with the childish look of the overall game, however after playing it for a second day, I have to say its grown on me and I cant get enough of it. Love it or hate it, Firemint has done a great job on the presentation of the game and like Firemint’s other titles, it is well polished and sure to be a big hit on the App Store.
What Flight Control Rocket Got Wrong
Too Colourful-That’s right, it’s too colourful, It’s like a pot of rainbows stabbing me in the eye. I know that may seem a little overboard, but coming from a big fan of the original Flight Control, this new edition seems out of place visually. Some may love the vibrate change but I’m sure there are others who don’t. I have to say that it grows on you, and if you loved Flight Control you might need to adjust to the new art style.
A Whole Lot Of Mumbo Jumbo-What happened to the good all days of just seeing how many planes you can land? Flight Control used to be to one of those games that you just pick up and play, yet FC Rocket seems a little complicated.
Instead of seeing how many rockets you have landed on the main screen, now players only get that information during their end of game stats. Taking away that number on the front screen detracts from what made Flight Control fun in the first place. I want to know how many rockets I have landed in real-time thank you!
The addition of the currency system is also a lot to handle for casual gamers. I understand that a number of developers are using in-app purchases to make some extra money, but was it really necessary in a game likeFlight Control Rocket?
The Final Verdict
Flight Control Rocket is a highly addictive and fresh app to the scene, which offers many casual gamers a great experience and an enjoyable game to play on the go. The catchy 70’s sci-fi tune reminds me of the TV show The Jetsons and their fast paced lifestyle. With great visuals some will admire and some may hate its a step forward to something more than just landing planes.
The difference with Flight Control and Flight Control Rocket is that Flight Control Rocket offers a lot more to the user with variety of rockets and objectives. With the new scoring system, players now can achieve combos and power up from your bots which add an additional element from the original finger trace game.
As Firemint mentioned the game is “easy to play but hard to master”. Flight Control Rocket is one to check out if your a fan of the original game and newcomers should definitely fit in with the new release.
